Rumors surrounding a new Mitsubishi SUV have been sparking for the past few months, and now it appears the Japanese automaker is feeding the flames. Enthusiasts are clamoring about the addition of an off-road SUV to the manufacturer’s lineup, a gap that has remained vacant since 2006.
Mitsubishi’s sales are going strong in North America, China, and Europe, making this the ideal time to introduce a new SUV. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross recently joined the SUV lineup, bringing the total number of available utility vehicles to four. An interview with the vice president of Mitsubishi design reveals that there may be more SUVs yet to come.
“Yes, that is one thing we are looking at. A new SUV,” said Tsuneshiro Kunimoto, vice president and general manager of Mitsubishi design. “The SUV is still growing, also in China and Europe, so it [an SUV] would be a good decision for Mitsubishi.”
Although it’s still available as the Mitsubishi Pajero in most of the world, the Montero officially left the United States market in 2006. The absence has left a hole in the North American Mitsubishi lineup. With a new Mitsubishi SUV looking likely, who’s to say that the next model won’t fill the off-road gap that the Montero left vacant?
